Unearthing the Truth: A Treasure-Filled Review of Cave Digger 2!
Intro:
We all know of many popular titles that associate with going into caves and mining. Clearly Minecraft is one of them. Well Cave Digger 2 is an interesting and well carved title. Grab your pistol, pickaxe, and other tools needed to embark on an adventure! Travel down the cave system to gather your precious minerals, and sell all of your goods to the company!
Gameplay:
In terms of gameplay, I would say that the game is mostly functional. This game is a VR title, but I can not use a VR headset. It gives me a splitting headache. So I settled for the less fun desktop variation
When you first start mining you have to manually pickup the ores you dig up. Digging works as how you would expect it to work. Having low level equipment results in you taking longer to mine materials. This is a huge motivator to get you to level up your items quickly. When entering the mine shaft for the first time you are greeted with a tutorial that explains the bare bones of the game controls and environment. It can take a while to get out of the cave system, as you need to take multiple paths to make your way out. Each mine has 3 floors and all of them are randomly generated. Although there are 3 floors to explore, you have very limited backpack space to carry items. You also do not have to finish all 3 floors to make a profit. If you find an elevator you can always take it back to the surface.
Here are all the tools you can put into your inventory and level up:
Pickaxe:
Hammer:
Shovel:
Scanner:
Dynamite:
Pistol:
Pan:
The pause menu is not super easy to navigate. It has a poorly designed UI that feels frustrating to use. Some items that you can upgrade can be hidden in sections that feel like they should not be there. Keep in mind that the UI is designed for VR headsets. It may be easier to navigate the menus on a headset.
Graphics:
The Graphics in the game feel like a typical VR title. The majority of the textures feel muddy. The character does not have a lower body. Your hands can clip in strange ways when you zoom out your field of view. The UI feels a little dated and unorganized. Its not terrible but I do not like the way it feels. Some of the visual effects are very nice. Overall the graphical experience is bearable.
Fun Rating:
Now the fun rating is something we should think about here. The game does not really inspire a great amount of emotions to me personally. I typically like these random dungeon style games, but I feel this concept just feels weak to me. Everything is there to have a blast. I just don't feel like the game is that fun.
Conclusion:
Would I recommend this game to other people? If you only play dungeon style games, and you like to gather resources then yes.
If you like a sense of intensity then probably not.
This game is a mix between an action game that feels like it could have some cozy elements in it. It can be slow paced at the wrong times, and I personally would not play it again.
