Why FlatOut is the Ultimate Pioneer of Racing Games

FlatOut is probably one of the most inovative racing games in the PS2 gaming era. As a young kid I found this game in the bottom of my friends game bin. I was naturally curious about what it was. I felt inclined to asked for him to describe the game to me. My friend explained that it was a derby style game where you crash cars, and race your way up to the top of the derby ranks. This game was everything I had ever dreamed of! I was all hyped up to buckle in, and get racing! I remember that we never really focused on the career mode anywhere near what I do when I revisit the game. When I was a child all I wanted to do was get the tinyest car I could find, and do the high jump challenge. It is still one of my favorite things to do in FlatOut.

Sure there are technically better titles out there now. For me its partially about the nestalgia. I love getting into that semi low poly car, flying down the track, and hoping I dont break my neck in the process. Aside from Grand Theft Auto, and Burnout, FlatOut is one of the few ps2 games that had a significantly great soft body physics system. It may be dated now, but in its time, FlatOut was a master marvle! No other game could beat it! Nothing felt more real than sliding sideways at 80mph through the mud, and smashing your opponent into a tree while watching them fly out of their car! If you are reading this, and you have never played the game. I strongly suggest you pickup a copy. Its worth every second of enjoyment! You can purchase the game on sale consistantly for roughly a few dollars on GoG or Steam!

If you want a little more nestalgia you can look at the original manual for the game here!
