Retro Rewind is a must play simulator!

Retro Rewind 9/10

A review by Bradley Pretre

I am oh so very late to the table with this one. Life has been crazy between moving, finding a new job, and finishing my own videogame "Tinkering Is Enough." I really ment to get to this review sooner but sometimes things gets away from you before you realize its too late to catch up!

Retro rewind is a wonderful take on the store and business building genre. It takes cute fun stylized graphics a lot of Photoshop Elements and creates an enticing title that is simple and exciting to play. If you're looking for a game it takes a good amount of time to play through then this is the one that you want to buy. Retro rewind is far from being another store simulator that is shovelware. I reminds me of the times i went to BlockBuster as a kid to pickout a movie to watch with my mom, and dad. Every week was a new advenure into the store to find what I wanted, or thought I wanted to watch.

Visual Style

  • Simplistic but enticing presentation
  • Very reminiscent of the style used in Schedule 1
  • Countertops and customer‑service areas stand out visually
  • Store customization genuinely changes the feel of your environment
  • Each movie having its own art style adds a fun layer of variety

The whole presentation leans hard into nostalgia — the kind that instantly transports you back to the days of renting movies from a local shop. It’s cozy, warm, and intentionally retro in a way that feels lovingly crafted rather than dated.

Audio

The soundtrack is phenomenal in its simplicity — charming, clean, and perfectly tuned to the game’s cozy sim vibe.

  • Sound effects carry a distinctly early‑1990s energy
  • Audio feedback is crisp and satisfying
  • Level‑up moments always feel exciting thanks to the sound design and reward pacing

Gameplay

  • Decorate your store
  • Handle bills
  • Buy VHS tapes
  • Rent them out
  • Repeat

It’s a tight, well‑built loop that flows naturally and never feels overwhelming. The pacing is excellent, and the constant upgrades make progression feel rewarding.

A few quirks show up — like employees occasionally getting stuck and needing to be fired to reset them — but nothing that breaks the cozy rhythm. Overall, it’s easy to pick up, especially if you’ve played similar management sims before, and it avoids harsh difficulty spikes.

Final Score

  • Graphics: 8/10
  • Sound: 10/10
  • Gameplay: 8/10
  • Overall: 9/10 — a nostalgic, cozy store‑management sim that nails its vibe and keeps you engaged from start to finish
